There is nothing better than exploring the beauty of the wilderness on the back of your horse. Yet reality is, this can be one of the most dangerous places to be if you or your horse are not properly prepared. From unexpected encounters with wildlife (or dogs, and dirt bikes) to steep ledges and sketchy terrain, this is all scary stuff if we are not prepared, yet exciting and fun if you and your horse are properly prepared with the skillsets and deep partnership to handle the unexpected. That is exactly why we started the school.
Because to us, there is nothing better than being horseback in the woods, exploring the sights and making amazing memories when you and your horse are prepared with the skills to go have fun!
James Steven Rodrigues, known as Steve, has spent a lifetime dedicated to the horse industry. Born and raised in North Louisiana, Steve was on horseback before he could even walk. Growing up on his grandfather's small farm, surrounded by horses and cattle, he developed an early bond with these animals that would shape his future.
After high school, Steve attended the Lookout Mountain School of Horseshoeing in Alabama, launching a 35-year career as a professional farrier. But his passion for horses didn’t stop there. In the late 90s, Steve took on the role of Ranch Program Manager at an “at risk youth” ranch. It was there that he began teaching horsemanship, stockmanship, and riding lessons to young people, and it marked the start of his lifelong study of horse behavior and care.
Steve has pursued advanced horsemanship, studying under renowned mentors like Ron McLoughlin, Craig Cameron, Chris Cox, Ken McNabb, and many others. His commitment to ongoing education has been unwavering, and he continues to attend clinics each year to sharpen his skills. Certified as a Riding Instructor through the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) and Julie Goodnight, Steve is recognized for his deep knowledge and hands-on approach to horsemanship.
In 2009, Steve moved to Colorado, where he began working for Palmer Quarter Horses. This led to a decade-long career as a wrangler and guide in the Weminuche Wilderness Area. During this time, he helped riders overcome their fears of heights, obstacles, and wildlife while leading rides through the rugged backcountry. These experiences not only deepened his understanding of horses but also strengthened his desire to help others grow in their horse journey.
Steve’s approach is built on practical experience, patience, and a genuine passion for passing down the knowledge he’s gathered over the years. He has traveled and worked with horses across the U.S. and internationally, from New Zealand to Texas, and he’s seen a common thread in the challenges riders face. His mission now is to help others build confidence and skills with their horses, ensuring that this rich culture of horsemanship continues to thrive for generations to come.
Whether you're looking to overcome personal fears or refine your horsemanship, Steve’s decades of experience and dedication make him a trusted partner on your horse journey.
